From Sketch to Street: The Story Behind My Mercer Mary-Janes

From Sketch to Street: The Story Behind My Mercer Mary-Janes

This pair of Mercer rhinestone Mary-Janes took the longest time from start to finish — but it was so worth it!

When I design, I always start by thinking about the lifestyles of the women who wear my shoes. I imagine their wardrobes, their daily routines, and how they move through the city. For women on the go, comfort is non-negotiable, so I make it a core design value in every pair I create.

Inspired by the gleaming windows of New York City’s skyscrapers and the hustle and bustle of its streets, I decided to incorporate mirrors and rhinestones into this design — a reflection of the city’s sparkle and energy. I wanted to create a pair of shoes that could truly take women from day to night — from work to play — with effortless style and comfort.

I’ve always loved the Mary-Jane silhouette. It’s timeless, versatile, and chic. But I noticed so many versions were plain or predictable — often just black and basic. I wanted to reimagine this classic with a fun, vibrant twist that feels modern and fresh.

The name “Mercer” holds a special place in my heart. It reminds me of my early days in New York City during the summer I interned in SoHo, walking up and down Mercer Street countless times. Those days were filled with dreams, creativity, and discovery — the same spirit I wanted to capture in this design.

As always, I began with a sketch. Sketching helps me visualize not just the shape, but the feeling — the materials, textures, and the construction process that brings the shoe to life. From there, the real work begins.

Each pair takes 20 to 30 hours to make by hand — a multi-day process of creating patterns, cutting the uppers and linings, gluing and sewing each component together, and finally attaching the outsoles and sock lining. Once my prototypes are complete, I collaborate closely with my factory to refine every detail. They have access to a wider range of materials and finishes, allowing me to elevate my designs further.

First prototype of Mercer maryjanes!

The Mercer Mary-Janes went through three rounds of sampling because I simply couldn’t make up my mind about the rhinestones and the buckles — every detail mattered.

Finally, they were born — and they’re everything I dreamed of.

These shoes are truly unique because:

The Mercer Mary-Janes are more than just pretty shoes — they’re a celebration of style, comfort, and individuality. They capture the energy of New York, the joy of sparkle, and the confidence of women who are always on the move.
